Disability Services at Northeastern University

The Disability Resource Center serves Northeastern students who have documented disabilities as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act as Amended (ADAAA) of 2008.  Our staff members regularly work with students with disabilities, including ADHD, autism spectrum disorders, chronic conditions, hearing and vision impairments, learning disabilities, mobility impairments, psychiatric disorders, and traumatic brain injury.

As a postsecondary institution that receives federal funds, Northeastern must comply with the legal requirements of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 by providing appropriate academic accommodations.  In this section, you will find materials that may assist you in understanding the shared responsibilities between the Disability Resource Center staff, students and faculty.  You will also find additional information on specific accommodation procedures in the drop down menu.


DRC responsibilities:

  • Evaluate documentation and requests for accommodation using an interactive process
  • Approve academic accommodations based on submitted documentation
  • Communicate with students around their responsibilities of notifying professors of approved accommodations
  • Provide Professor Notification Letters to students that clearly indicate the approved accommodation(s)
  • Ensure academic accommodations are implemented appropriately


Faculty responsibilities:

  • Ensure students that request accommodations for disability related reasons are referred to the DRC. You can do this by including a simple statement on your syllabus.
  • Provide and implement only approved accommodations list on the student professor notification letter
  • Contact the DRC if you have concerns about an approved accommodation and how to implement it
  • Only provide accommodations for students that have provided you with an official professor notification letter
  • Maintain the students’ privacy by not sharing information about a students accommodations
  • Provide handouts, videos and other course materials in accessible formats


Student responsibilities:

  • Request accommodations, provide appropriate documentation, and engage in the interactive process
  • Complete the registration paperwork with a DRC specialist
  • Provide faculty with a copy of the Professor Notification Letter
  • Follow DRC guidelines for implementation of specific accommodations including deadlines or timelines
  • Notify the DRC in a timely manner if accommodations are not implemented
